Paul George, Portland?

Since being swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, rumors have been swirling around the 2013 Most Improved Player, Paul George.

Most recent however, the rumors have involved the Portland Trailblazers.

Could a trade involving Paul and Portland be possible, or even likely?

My take:

Twitter Love

is the reason behind most of the rumors circling the two parties. Point guard Damian Lillard and shooting guard CJ McCollum have both been extremely vocal on social media with wants for George to come to Portland.

First, CJ said this:

Then, Lillard retweeted this:

The Trailblazers were swept by Golden State in the first round, despite having added prime defender and scorer, Jusuf NurkicThey could definitely use some help, and it seems the players want Paul George.

Trade Talk

It’s no secret that the Pacers organization has already shopped George’s name around (this season, at the trade deadline).

If Indiana did decide to rid of their franchise player, it would be an immediate white flag. Giving up to start a new era, and starting that era from scratch.

So, if a trade were to go down, this is the best assets swap I could think of:

  • Indiana Pacers send Paul George, and Myles Turner.
  • Portland Trailblazers send Allen Crabbe, and Jusuf Nurkic.

Crazy, I know; just hear me out.

Myles Turner is still on his rookie contract, and has plateued after an incredible rookie season. Receiving Jusuf Nurkic would be more than an upgrade, and his value has never been higher. Portland only originally traded for Bosnian to add depth in their playoff run. I don’t think he was ever depicted as a long term piece.

Allen Crabbe is another young player who has shown lots of promise, and would have no issues filling in for George at the three. He’s an excellent three-point shooter and ball handler, and was attracting plenty of interest last summer.

To top it all off, Portland would send a future first, because for Christ’ sake, it is Paul George we’re talking about.

Likelihood and Outcome

There is absolutely NO chance of a trade going down between these two parties, but it’s always nice to imagine.

George may be the missing piece Portland needs, a star player for the back court to support. He’s never had a strong point and shooting guard, and may thrive in this system. It would certainly make for a disgusting Big 3, and the Trailblazers still have Festus Ezeli to take over at the center position.

It wouldn’t be a terrible trade for either side, as George is assuredly leaving in free agency. However, I doubt the franchise is smart enough to dump him before he dumps them.
